While acoustic guitars might seem all the same, the truth is that they have some very important differences that you need to be aware of.
While a classical guitar is technically under the umbrella of an acoustic guitar, there are a few key differences between the two styles.
Most notably, they have a slightly different shape and slightly larger frets. But the biggest difference between classical guitars and acoustic guitars is the type of strings they use.
Classical guitars use nylon strings, which produce a more mellow and slightly more muted sound. Regular acoustic guitars use steel strings that produce a brighter and more resonate sound.
Because of the stark sound difference, acoustic guitars (otherwise known as ‘steel string acoustic’ guitars) are the more popular out of the two. In fact, nearly all pop music is played and recorded on steel string acoustic guitars.
Classical guitars have a tendency to be used by guitar players who play classical music or are interested in learning Flamenco or Spanish guitar.
For this reason, steel string acoustic guitars are a more common choice for guitarists across the world.
The main selling point for acoustic-electric guitars is that you can plug them into an amplifier. This makes it an ideal selection for any guitarist who is playing live performances.
Acoustic-electric guitars are not essential for recording, but recording with a non-electric acoustic guitar will require you to have a quality recording microphone.
